What is Plan Ceibal
Plan Ceibal was created in 2007 as a plan for inclusion and equal opportunities with the aim of supporting Uruguayan educational policies with technology. Since its implementation, every child who enters the public education system in any part of the country is given a computer for personal use with free Internet connection at school. In addition, Plan Ceibal provides programs, educational resources and teacher training courses that transform the ways of teaching and learning.
Uruguay, a country that stands out for its significant schooling rates, now faces the challenge of retaining Secondary School students from poorer social backgrounds. The public education system covers 83% of students between 4 and 15 years of age. The incorporation of digital technologies is strategic for transforming the pedagogical approach.
Thanks to the installation of fiber optics throughout the country, Uruguay is a leader in fixed Internet connection speed. Plan Ceibal contributed to reduce the computer access gap between the highest and lowest income quintiles, establishing an equity scenario that has remained stable since 2010.
